bySaabye, Stian, #DESKO? Have I figured it all out now?

As a musical entrepreneur of sorts you have to learn fast, as you often have to ask yourself; Am I a stone cold genius or absolutely not?

… but if you wish to go 100% independent, at least in the short and medium run, then there is really no alternative , you can’t have the usual debate, is this thing good or bad? you simply have to dive in and the hopefully find out.

Creating a musical brand… and a band…  simply isn’t easily possible today with such a noise in the media landscape. You are not only competing with tons of music, old and new but, with so many other things and people simply do not have that much time available in the 24 hours.

However creating your own musical world, as in my case the bySaabye.world, allows me to do what I love doing most, and always have done, my music, and that finally on my own terms. See, my father told me two things… I couldn’t believe it as I was not even 10 at the time; that one, always do the opposite as what all the others do and two, never sign anything. Food for thought for a young teen.

However, I have very much taken his advise with me, not only with bySaabye and #DESKO, my re-boot of the Disco soundtrack of my youth, but in life as general. So when I decided to start doing my own homework instead of doing everybody elses when it come to music, then these two advices was placed top of my mood-board. I would not want to start with a record label, a publisher or continue writing for other artists again initially, but only for myself and my brand. I would want to agency my own legacy so to speak, build up a catalog of songs and recordings before even thinking about speaking to the established music industry. Get my business in order so to speak. And. that takes a while, I wouldn’t want to have an albums worth of songs and no clear strategy in place, no sound, no visuals, no live shows and the rest, i would want to make a real good job of it.

Initially I did not want to front it myself, but that was somehow the very problem of my life before, always others never myself. Sure, it’s good fun to work with others but I had to do myself also with this. Thats where Stian came into the picture, my alter-ego, the 25 odd year wanna-be pop-star, that could be the poster-boy and front person.

However, as I got closer to have a sizeable catalog of songs, counting 100+ as of today, it more and more felt as this was simply confusing things even more. So, i had a word with myself, so to speak, and decided that if this should be as real as I wanted it to be, i had to take the thankless task of fronting this fantastic world myself, so the poster-boy is now also on my plate.

Fingers crossed, that this will be a somehow successful tale of modern music making come 2025.
